StoryBook Ceramics : We Hate Fakes Too

Poppies, Poppies Everywhere....

Ah, the good ole' days.

Once upon a time, the Hull Little Red Riding Hood line was one of the easiest groups of pottery to authenticate. Although there were some examples of the original cookie jars and accessories made with interesting or "one-off" decals, the general rule for beginner to moderate collectors was: If it doesn't have the poppy, violet and daisy decal, don't buy.

Here's a NEWS FLASH! Forget the decals. They've been duplicated, and they are everywhere.

Just about every single piece of LRRH pottery currently being faked and sold on eBay is sporting poppies these days. The decals are available commercially from the Olympic Decal Company. This is a mixed blessing. We use them to really give our reproductions an authentic look. They match the vintage pieces perfectly, so our products blend in to existing collections seamlessly. That's also the problem. They match the vintage pieces perfectly, so an unmarked, or mismarked piece can easily fool a novice collector.

Here's some new benchmarks, sans poppies, to help you discern "real" from "fake" LRRH items.

The hair on the faked items is nearly always painted in bright yellow enamel monotone cold paint. The eyes are painted in the wrong style, and the gold trim is burnt, cracked, purplish, or grayed about 90% of the time due to poor firing techniques.

The faked pieces are also many times "fantasy items" such as "hat pin holders", "sugar shakers", or "pie vents". Learn the list of pieces Hull made, and stick to it. Any seller who says "This isn't in the books" isn't to be trusted. If it "isn't in the books", there's a pretty good darn reason. It's fake.

Visit our image gallery for more pictures to help you with identifying the Hull LRRH line. And remember, poppies are everywhere.
